The History of the Renault
Renault is one of the oldest car manufacturers. Renault was founded as Societe Renault Freres in 1899 by three of the Renault brothers. Their first Renault car was the Voiturette 1CV. In 1907 the majority of taxi’s in Paris and London were made by Renault. Renaults were seen as a luxury at the time. Both Louis and Marcel Renault raced, but Marcle, the other brother, was killed during the Paris-Madrid race in 1903. In 1909 Fernand died from health issues, and Louis was the only brother left. Soon after, the business was renamed Renault Automobile Company.
During WWI, Renault started manufacturing ammunition and engines for military aircraft. After the war ended, Renault expanded into farming and industrial machinery.
The Nazis took France in WWII, but Louis Renault refused to manufacture tanks for the Germans. Instead, Renault produced trucks.
Louis Renault was accused of colluding with the Germans. In 1944 he was arrested. He died while awaiting trial, and the company became nationalised after his death.
After the war, they launched cars such as the Renault 4, Renault 10 and the upmarket Renault 16.
Renault launched their famous model, the Clio, in May 1990. It was the best selling car in Europe in the 1990s, which said a lot about the model Renault created. Since then, it has been one of their most popular cars. It was even voted car of the year again in 2006.
They were one of the leaders of electric vehicles in 2013. In 2016 in Europe, the Renault ZOE was the best selling electric car. Renault is now planning for the future and looking into manufacturing more electric vehicles and hybrid models.
