The History of Hyundai
Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company was founded in 1947. The Hyundai Motor Company was not set up till 1967. Hyundai’s first model was the Cortina in co-operation with the Ford Motor Company in 1968.
They developed their own car in 1974. The first Korean car, The Pony, was released in 1975. The the car was then shipped to Canada, and it became the number one selling car. They built their one-millionth car in 1985. They could not ship to the US due to emission standards.
In 1986 they finally shipped to the US, with the Excel being the first car shipped over. It was even nominated number ten on the “Best Product” list in the Fortune Magazine. By 1990 Hyundai had now sold four million cars.
In 1998 Hyundai bought the majority of Kia Motors. They own 33.8% of Kia motors.
In 2004 Hyundai was level with Honda for brand quality in a JD Power Survey right behind Toyota. Hyundai was the fourth-best automaker, according to a report in 2010, which was an enormous feat for the Korean company.
The Hyundai Tucson was launched in 2004 with 2021 it being the top-selling car in Ireland. There is even a hybrid model of the very popular Hyundai Tucson showing Hyundai’s innovation.
Hyundai began manufacturing hybrid electric vehicles in 2009, including the Santa Fe Hybrid and the i20.
Today Hyundai are hugely popular and are one of the giants in electric and hybrid car manufacturing. Kia is still a relatively popular car in its own right too.
