The lead up to your driving test can be a nervous time, and it’s easy to feel like you have a hundred different things to remember all at once. The good news is that a little preparation goes a long way. Just knowing what to expect and what to check before you arrive at the test centre can take away a lot of the stress and let you focus on your driving.
To help learner drivers feel ready, KennCo Young Driver Ambassador, Brendan Tierney, tells us the last-minute checks you should run through before your driving test.
Have Your Driving Documents In Order
Making sure you have your paperwork and documents ready to go before you leave the house gives you one less thing to worry about. Brendan recommends that you have everything you need checked and ready before the test. This includes:
- Your Learner Permit – Make sure you have your learner permit ready to show the tester before the test begins.
- Proof of insurance, tax and NCT – Make sure to bring all your vehicle documents and that they are valid – and remember that you now need to bring your insurance certificate with you!
- Your glasses, if you need them – If you wear glasses or need them for driving, don’t forget to bring them along. You’re also allowed to wear sunglasses during the test so bring a pair with you if it’s sunny or bright conditions.
Check Over Your Car Before Your Driving Test
If your car isn’t roadworthy, then you won’t be allowed to leave the test centre. And your tester will also expect you to be able to demonstrate your car’s controls. With this in mind, Brendan suggests a few quick checks on the car itself to save you from an easy slip-up on the day.
- Tyres – check the tread depth of your tyres and make sure they’re properly inflated.
- Lights – Your indicators and brake lights must be in working order.
- Dashboard Warning Lights – There should be no warning lights showing on your dashboard when you start the car.
- Engine and technical checks – Make sure you know your technical checks, as the tester will ask you about them.
- Hand signals – Know them and be ready to demonstrate when the tester asks.
- L Plates – Make sure that your L plates are displayed correctly.

Getting Yourself Ready for the Driving Test
Being prepared isn’t just about getting your car ready. How you feel on the day can matter just as much to your driving. Remember: nerves before your driving test are normal. It’s how your brain helps you prepare for an event. But it’s important to control those nerves and not let them affect your driving during the test. To help you keep you calm on the day, Brendan advises that you:
- Sleep well – A good night’s sleep beforehand will help you stay alert and focused.
- Allow plenty of time – Give yourself more than enough time to get to the test centre so you’re not rushing.
- Do a short warm-up drive – A quick practice drive before the test can help settle the nerves.
- Remember the tester wants you to pass – They’re not trying to catch you out.
It’ll Be Over Before You Know It
The actual driving part of the test lasts roughly a half hour, so it’ll be over sooner than you think. Just try to relax and concentrate on your driving. If you do make a mistake, refocus and move on. You can make a number of mistakes and still pass the test so it’s not about perfection. As Brendan puts it, passing your driving test isn’t about perfect driving. It’s about safe, confident driving and good observation.
